Williamson: We do n't usually get such a volume of Tests

In two weeks, New Zealand did play six Test matches. That's unusual, on two works. As a red-ball class, you know, it's actually connecting with that again and is trying to use our abilities and ideas as effectively as possible.

Williamson, himself, a veteran of over 100 Testing and a leading part of the Fab Four, is yet to totally split batting in India and Sri Lanka. In 22 pitches, he statistics 31.36 and has managed just five fifty-plus results. One of them was his debut pitches, again in 2010, when he was at the wrinkle for 299 balloons to score 131. Since then, however, only five of his pulls have lasted 100 balloons or more. The defensive talent which sets him off, and enables him to form so much of New Zealand's fortunes on their own ground, is severely tested by the quality of the ball and the nature of the conditions around.

Williamson was looking forward, nevertheless, to facing that problem once, starting with New Zealand's second always Test match against Afghanistan. " It's really important that we look to grow as a system", he said. " It's nice and clear on how we want to play over here. When you play in these parts of the world, which are significantly different from home, you always know it's a challenging problem. But you know it's always a wonderful experience and really, really solid when you play."

New Zealand have bolstered their aid team, on a short-term schedule, with the changes of Sri Lankan roll star Rangana Herath and past India batting coach Vikram Rathour as they push for a better result in the 2023-25 pattern of the World Test Championship. They finished fifth out of nine clubs next time. This time, they occupy second place, behind India and Australia.

" In some ways it's like tournament sport, is n't it"? Williamson said. " Even though it's over a longer period of time in the Test Championship, but the value of sports is great. The framework around Test cricket with the Test Championship is really important and it's brought out a lot of truly exciting activities. And so naturally having six Test matches together is a big part of our Test Championship calendar and one that we're excited about".
