Hayden believes the team would be better off using Smith at his best bat position, No., despite Warner's retirement, if he had opened for Australia. 3 and 4
Matthew Hayden, a former Australia starting pitcher, opposes Steven Smith's thought of playing in the Test. Hayden calls Smith's suggestion that moving him to a" completely different position" is" crazy" insane because he thinks he should bird where he has most of his works at home. Hayden, Australia's most famous opening in Testing before David Warner went past him in December 2023, believes that the best three posts need to be "protected" in Test cricket.

" But, the function of an opening player compared to a middle-order player is quite different. And it did n't take long to discover that when you get into challenging conditions, like they faced in the first series outside of Australia, which was in New Zealand, that opening the batting is very difficult."
Smith played as an opening for the first time in his Swab job earlier this year. Initially, during the two household Tests against West Indies and then in New Zealand for another two sports. In those eight pitches, he was out for 12 or less on five times and scored only one half-century- the unbroken 91 in Brisbane- at an average of 28.50. In contrast, he percentages 67.07 from No. 3 and 61.50 from No. 4.
" I, personally, as I said at the time, was on record saying that I did n't like changing," Hayden added". I think it's crazy to believe that you have the world's best-in-class flour in a specific location. And therefore you change to a completely different position. For a few factors, I think that's outrageous. First, why? For a weapon in that location, like a desired player.
" And then it also is not a wonderful smile to the first-class set-up, which is very much in the American culture, been driving tremendous benefits towards key roles, get that any one of the roles- wicketkeeping, batting, spinners, fast bowlers, opening batters. So the]batting opportunities of ] one, two and three is a category which needs to be protected in my opinion. It sets up play".
If Australia decide to move opening Usman Khawaja to a different position, they will need to look for a replacement companion. Smith and Khawaja have opened in all of Australia's four Testing since Warner's goodnight Evaluation at the SCG at the start of this year, and moving Smith out of the opening gambling may mean giving that place to a novice flour. Has that next beginning casino been a problem for Australia after Warner's exit?
" Yes, it is. It is", Hayden said. " For the first time, it does n't feel as secure. American cricket was excellently served by David Warner. He gave a company that was really competitive, wonderfully active. He actually took that legacy that I'd created through the 2000s to a new level, strike rates in excess of 80]70] and gave great momentum to the top order, which then is really a conservative, pretty good, but quite conservative batting line-up. So I think he's an enormous loss in terms of how do you replace him.
" Clearly, they've gone in the direction of Steven Smith and thus far, whether they continue with that strategy, time will tell. And we have guys like]Cameron ] Bancroft that are always in the pipeline, Matt Renshaw is in the pipeline.
" Bancroft, when you look at his form in England, has been excellent, but that's domestic cricket. It's not the Border-Gavaskar-type cricket so a bit of a few things to really prove from that engine room in Australian cricket, which has been challenged right now with David's absence".
After Australia's white-ball tour of the UK on September 4, where they play a T20I series against Scotland, three T20Is and five ODIs against England, Smith himself has previously stated that he has" no idea" about his starting batting position for the India Tests. " I'm happy anywhere and I'll bat wherever for the team", Smith had said. To kick off their Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, both Bailey and Cummins have recently suggested that Australia will likely end up playing for the same top six as their previous four Test matches.
