Joe Root says he is terrible to see James Anderson retire but understands England's determination to move on from the famous fast bowler to prepare for the next visit of Australia.
With a score of 704 rejections, Anderson bid farewell to worldwide cricket at Lord's on Friday, beating West Indies by an pitches and 114 works. Although pension was forced upon Anderson, the 41-year-old seemed at peace after his 188th and last cover. He will then get on a ball leader position with the team for the next two Testing, and the future series against Sri Lanka.
Root has been along for most of the journey, playing 110 Testing with Anderson. He captained Anderson 46 times, the second-most behind Alastair Cook ( 49 ). Having debuted in December 2012 at Nagpur with Anderson in the team, Root admitted he will lose his good friend "terribly" on the area.
" For me, all I've always known for England is playing alongside Jimmy and that's been for 12 years," Root said.
" It's a bit of a weird one, seeing Stuart [Broad ] go last year and [now ] Jimmy. I'll badly lose playing alongside him, but the fact that he'll be around for the summers will be great for the younger batsmen coming through and for us to keep using that knowledge and everything else he has to offer the dressing room. I'm really pleased that he's been allowed to have the send-off that he deserves but moreover, it's in some ways, a little bit sad to see him go. "
Anderson's new position will start next week at Trent Bridge, the first of 17 Testing between now and the 2024-25 Ashes line. Given that England are already atop the World Test Championship, their position has been a major source of contention.
But the desire to restore the vase since losing it in 2017-18 is excellent, especially after last season's 2-2 stalemate. The introduction at Lord's of Gus Atkinson, with 7 for 45 and 5 for 61, and Jamie Smith's 70 along with four strikes as the new bowler, are the first measures of that future-planning.
The importance of preparing for an Ashes trip is well known to Root than to most people. He has lost three in his career, two of them as captain, and remains without a Test win ( or century ) in Australia. As such, he can see the reasoning adopted, especially after a dejection 4-0 defeat in 2021-22 during the Covid-19 crisis- a line he feels should not have happened in the first place.
" Arguably we should n't have gone last time, should we, in retrospect? Thinking of Covid, it was about keeping the lights on next time we went.
" It's a new option for us. At the time, we believed the right thing to do. Going into the following day, we'll get in a completely different location. The secret, in my opinion, is that even though you can prepare and have all the best intentions for a certain outcome, things must fall into place.
" I think, as a player, they're the line that you're always looking forward to, they're the people you're constantly building towards. You look at what we've done in earlier tours of Australia and what we think will work out in those circumstances more than anything.

On the subject of travelling Australia, West Indies ' introduction from their vacation earlier this year with a 1-1 draw has Root afraid of a comeback. " We've not seen what they're capable of with the bat yet, and we wo n't be taking that for granted and taking that lightly," he said.
" And finally when it came to the game, they've got some really talented bowlers. You only need to consider what they can do in Australia's difficult-to-win Test match at Brisbane, which is only accessible in January. "
As for Root, the addition of 34-year-old Mark Wood for the majority of the line following Anderson's pension means he remains the fourth-oldest in the club. And despite watching Broad and Anderson play with great fanfare in subsequent house Tests, he is undoubtedly thinking about retiring.
When questioned about his own veil visit, he retorted," Oh, we go." " Not at the moment. I'd like to anticipate playing for some time in the future. And when that day comes, I'm sure I'll figure anything out.
" You've got to earn the right to have that sort of mythical end, like the likes of Jimmy, Stuart, Cookie [at the Oval in 2018] have had. My focus strictly is on scoring as some works for this team as I you and helping us get as many activities as we can.
" Until that target and that push change, then I'll continue to only concentrate on that and, hopefully, we'll worry about that long-term," I said. "
