After declining a contract extension, a betting allrounder heads northeast.
After deciding to leave Warwickshire, which he led to the County Championship subject in 2021, will Rhodes return to Durham next year.
Rhodes, who has a contract with Warwickshire until the end of the season, opted not to accept an improvement because he felt the time was right to move after seven years there and could compete for a more lucrative deal elsewhere. He has since agreed to a long-term commitment with Durham, playing in a seasoned starting batting line-up.
Warwickshire confirmed Rhodes ' exit on Saturday, while Durham are yet to announce his appearance. " It's not been an easy choice", Rhodes said. " I've spent most of my specialist career below at Edgbaston, made life-long friends, and had success on the field. There are thoughts I will treasure for some, several times.
However, I believe it's time to move on and take on a new problem. Coming to the team as a 22-year-old, I always thought I'd get such an opportunity to captain a great team like Warwickshire. It's been an incredible honour… I'd like to believe I've made a good factor and helped get the club forward."
Rhodes wants to stick around for the rest of the time while Durham avoid falling to division. He said," It goes without saying that I will give my all to the club for the rest of the year. The One Day Cup has started off well. Who knows, it would be awesome to go out on a large by winning some dinnerware."
After starting his career at Yorkshire, Rhodes has played 86 first-class games for Warwickshire, averaging 35.85 with the pitcher and scoring 10 lots- including 156 in the end-of-season Bob Willis Trophy last against Lancashire in 2021. He has even featured in 37 T20s for them- though nothing since 2021- and 36 List A activities.
Rhodes was appointed team captain ahead of the 2020 season, succeeding Jeetan Patel, and led Warwickshire to their first Tournament title since 2012 the following summers. He stepped down at the end of last year, citing a need to focus on his own shape, and has averaged 41.21 so far this year.
Mark Robinson, Warwickshire's coach, said:" When you work as a brain coach with a captain for a number of years, you form a specific bond which will always last. But privately, I would like to congratulate Will for all the help he has given me, as well as the wider team, both as a innovator and a performer on the field."
Durham announced earlier this week that New Zealand's Neil Wagner is joining them for the Championship run-in and the One-Day Cup.
