Gary Lineker, the broadcaster of Match of the Day, has 12 months left on his BBC deal.
Questions are being asked over Gary Lineker's long-term coming at the BBC after a review claims that the Match of the Day number does not provide the broadcaster's Champions League highlights program next year.
The BBC may become showing Champions League football for the first time in September, as they begin a three-year offer to show features, which will see 16 regular exhibits on a Wednesday night.
Gary Lineker, who hosted BT Sport's Champions League protection, would have been the obvious choice to host this new program, but The Telegraph reports Gabby Logan did take the place of Gary Lineker, who has already presented the program.
They add that discussions were held between Lineker and the BBC, but no official offer was made, citing Lineker's other agreements such as his tremendously successful The Rest is Football radio and the 62-year-old's reluctance to travel to the BBC's Salford basic from his home in west London for the midweek displays.
Lineker, who began hosting MOTD on 1999, is about to enter the final 12 months of his £1.35million-per-year contract with the BBC, meaning his future with the corporation is currently unclear. The BBC recently announced a new four-year deal for MOTD that will run until 2029.
The former England striker has been the subject of controversy in recent times and was suspended for a week by the BBC last year for his criticism of the Government's language around asylum policy. Commentators and pundits canceled MOTD, which was later broadcast with just crowd noise, as a result of this.
Lineker also made headlines this summer when he criticized Gareth Southgate's squad and FA officials ' performance against Denmark in the Euro 2024 game.
