Liverpool's goal to add a real world superstar to their squad has been reported, according to reports.
A document in France has revealed how nearer the club was to signing Kylian Mbappe in 2022 as Liverpool considers a peaceful transfer glass in which new manager Arne Slot made the fewest alterations to his new team.
The France forward was at the heart of this season's most high-profile transfer when he left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his commitment to sign for Real Madrid on a completely transfer.
The 25-year-old nearly left the European investment two years ago, only to agree to a one-year contract extension that would work until 2024, drawing a line on a drawn-out transfer saga that had raged on for a number of months.
Real Madrid were greatly linked with the troubled Mbappe in 2022, but according to L'Equipe, Liverpool believed they were leading the race to mark the forward. The European outlet reports that discussions were held over a move for Mbappe in 2022, which led to the player agreeing to make the move to the Premier League side.
Liverpool were said to be willing to pay £168million ( €200million ) for Mbappe, but the report claims that a late increase in PSG's asking price to €400million from director Antero Henrique, plus the player's wage demands put the deal beyond the Reds ' financial grasp.
Liverpool did then move on to their next destination and would bring in scorer Darwin Nunez from Benfica in a transfer price up to £85million. The Uruguayan has netted 33 goals in 98 looks for the team since his move.
Mbappe, however, saw out the final two years of his PSG commitment and left the Parc des Princes on a completely this summer, signing a great bargain with £12.8million a year, along with a £128million signing-on benefit that will be paid over five years.
