On July 15th, the English Football Association officially announced that Gareth Southgate has stepped down as the manager of the England national team.
The 53-year-old Southgate took charge of the England team in 2016, leading them through nearly eight years of competitive football. During his tenure, Southgate managed 102 matches, achieving 64 wins, 20 draws, and 18 losses. Under his guidance, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and the finals of both the 2021 and 2024 European Championships. Unfortunately, despite reaching the final twice, England could not secure the European Championship title.
In his farewell message, Southgate said, "As a proud Brit, it has been the honor of my life to serve and coach the England team. This role has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. Now, it is time for a change and to open a new chapter."
According to previous media reports, current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, former Chelsea managers Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, and England U21 manager Lee Carsley are all in contention to succeed Southgate.
