The allrounder called Suryakumar's management skills "amazing" for thinking out of the box
In the second T20I, Sri Lanka needed nine to succeed. Mohammad Siraj's bowling was still on the line for India ( Siraj had already conceded just 11 runs in his first three overs ). They also had one over from Khaleel Ahmed, who could have bowled the 20th.
But with Kusal Perera still at the seam, captain Suryakumar Yadav went to the offspin of Rinku Singh, which had never before been seen in a T20 worldwide. It worked out beautifully- Perera first top-edging a cross-batted shot so hard, Rinku himself was getting under it. Afterwards in the above, Ramesh Mendis even holed out, to strong midwicket.
Having watched Rinku concede just three works and claim two innings in a stress over, Suryakumar made the decision to pitcher his own offspin in the last over, taking two more innings himself, and conceding just five to win the match.
After the match, Washington Sundar, the infantry offspin bowling in the team described this charm of captain as "amazing". The pitch was taking great change, and Sri Lanka were struggling tremendously against the gradual batsmen. Suryakumar gambled on two rate part-timers.
" It was remarkable from Surya and his administration knowledge", Washington said. " I think he felt given the situation if he bowled more bowlers we'd have a great chance to win the match. Given the batsman and the position, he took one or two options, and it did wonders for us.
" There were only 12 balloons to go and Kusal Perera was batting. Rinku got him up and Surya himself came on in the next over and nearly won the game for us. We all know he has a great heart when he goes out there to bats, but he also has a huge heart in leadership when well."
Washington himself subsequently took two innings in a Super Over, which he only gave up two runs. He had taken 2 for 23 in ordinary enjoy.
" Actually, I had no notion I was going to dish. It was after the players walked out that Surya turned about and said: ' Washy, you're on.' I was quite content, to be honest. When the captain wants you to pitcher especially in difficult situations, in a Super Over. I thought it was a wonderful opportunity for me to move up and win games for my country. Bless God it went also."
Although India did n't seem capable of defending 137 for the vast majority of the chase, Suryakumar never lost hope, Washington said. Sri Lanka, at one period, needed 28 goes off 28 balloons, with nine wickets in hand. India had therefore set in motion a great collapse.
" Surya kept teling us that one or two innings, and the game would certainly alter," Washington said". In these kinds of innings, in low-scoring game, yet run-a-ball could be a lot of pressure on the players because there's something for the batsmen in the innings.
" He said one or two innings in the middle innings may get us in the game, and that's exactly what happened. You wo n't see such games again, so I hope the audience enjoyed it. To be a part of this sport feels great".
