He was preferred by the candidates over Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain of the 2024 T20 World Cup winning club
Before Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain of the team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as India's fresh T20I captain.
Suryakumar's first project is the three T20Is in Sri Lanka on July 27, 28 and 30, which is also the primary task of India's fresh coach Gautam Gambhir. It's even seen as the second step towards building for the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. While Hardik is part of the T20I club, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain.
In the five-match T20I set against Zimbabwe that followed the T20 World Cup, Gill had led India.
Following Rohit Sharma's withdrawal from T20Is following the World Cup, there was a want for a fresh captain. Though Hardik was Rohit's assistant at the T20 World Cup and is a more skilled captain- he has led India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is, aside from leading Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL- it is understood health concerns and task management may have been factors in the decision taken by the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar.
Hardik had suffered an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup final October-November and was out of motion until the start of IPL 2024, when he returned to direct MI. Hardik has played in only 46 of the 79 T20Is India have played since the start of 2022.
Suryakumar, however, has captained the Mumbai position team in the local loop. More recently, he led India to a 4-1 get over Australia in a T20I line next November, followed by a 1-1 set draw in South Africa.
Suryakumar was never named in the ODI club for the Sri Lanka journey, while Hardik, also, is taking a crack from 50-over tournaments.
