He suggested that the spinner needed a little more time to regain their rhythm in Galle.
Sri Lanka have never played a Test in Galle in over a month, while one of their main bowlers has never played long-format cricket for several weeks. Could this explain why Sri Lanka's delayed bowlers failed to match New Zealand on day two of the Test?
Sri Lanka bowlers needed a little time to recover from their slump, according to spin bowlers coach Craig Howard, who was n't really trying to disqualify them. However, they could had done better than they did, he said.
" If we'd bowled the way we'd have liked to, we'd been in a much better place", Howard said. " We would have limited the barrier balls and made it much more difficult for the New Zealand batters to turn the hit the way they did if we had been able to hold our line and length for more," he said. We pay heavy attention to controlling the run rate, and we did n't do that today".
On a Galle record taking lots of turn, Sri Lanka's major spinners- Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya- took only a wicket every on Thursday. Jayasuriya gave ahead 99, in his 31 innings.
" Prabath was considerably out. He's a really happy man", Howard said. " You average 22 at Galle for a cause, so I'm sure he'll come back, and I'm sure he'll have a significant impact on this Test".
Ramesh was more costly than Jayasuriya, but, going at an market price of more than four in his 17 innings. Where Jayasuriya had played in two of Sri Lanka's three Testing in England, Ramesh had been on the outside throughout.
" Ramesh Mendis has n't played a red-ball game for probably a few months now", Howard said. " He's been on an England tour not playing, and the LPL ( Lanka Premier League ) prior to that. He was likely a portion of from a length-and-line point of view".
The New Zealand bowlers ' shot-making did present a problem, Howard said. But he had assurance that if Sri Lanka's spinners bowled exactly, the match may change in their behalf.
The first thing is to control the size and line. If we do that there's enough in this innings. The game you speed up extremely fast in the back end. We might be one or two wickets aside from a first-innings guide. We should be able to move quickly and take a guide, but if not, we should have a smaller target to catch up with them.
