The team for which the selection board led by Ajit Agarkar may choose later this month will not be available for India's season-opening Duleep Trophy starting on September 5. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah are not. However, most another centrally-contracted people are set to have in the four-team competitors.

Among those who will be strongly watched are KL Rahul, who missed four of the five England Testing earlier this year due to injury and Rishabh Pant, who could be featuring in his first red-ball match since returning to whole health following a car accident in December 2022. The other expert batters who are likely to be chosen from among the four teams are Rajat Patidar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill.

Mohammed Shami, who is approaching whole health, might also be asked to play in one of the games to demonstrate his or her match health. Shami is now in his last phases of rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru and has gradually eased himself into tremendous ball workloads over the past year.

The top people will receive an extended break before the first of those assignments, the two-test set against Bangladesh, which will begin in Chennai on September 19 as India prepares to perform 10 Tests over the next five months, five at house and five at home.

One of the two Duleep Trophy activities that will be held together from September 5 is likely to be moved from Anantapur to Bengaluru owing to administrative concerns. The KSCA has been formally announced as the organization's preferred number for the match.

The BCCI is working to give home cricket a priority by allowing many contracted players to play in the competition. In February, secretary Jay Shah had sent out a letter that prioritising IPL over private cricket would lead to" serious implications", which had eventually led to Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan losing their main deals after they missed some of the Ranji Trophy sports just before the IPL.

Originally a zonal competition picked by a convener from each of the six zones ( North, South, East, West, Central and North-East ), the format of the Duleep Trophy was tweaked prior to this season, upon the recommendation of a BCCI working group comprising former head coach Rahul Dravid, NCA chief VVS Laxman, Agarkar and BCCI general manager Abey Kuruvilla.

One of the reasons for this move was to ensure the selectors are able to give a wider pool of players, including those in the targeted group, enough opportunities heading into India's Test season. The four-team tournament is set to run until September 22 with each side set to play the other three in a round-robin format. The topper at the end of the standings will be the winner.
