Former England quickly bowler is already team president at Gloucestershire
David" Syd" Lawrence, the former Gloucestershire and England fast bowler, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease ( MND).
A profoundly built hard bowling, Lawrence played five Testing for England as well as making 280 looks for Gloucestershire, during which he took 625 innings for the team. In 2022, he became Gloucestershire's second black leader.
His treatment, announced by the team on Friday, makes him the latest in a series of sportsmen affected by MND, carefully following the death of former rugby league person Rob Burrow from the illness earlier this month.
Will Brown, Gloucestershire's cheerful chief executive, said:" Everyone at the team is devastated to hear of the information from David Lawrence and his MND treatment.
" David is an image of the sport, a team story and a leader as the first English- born Black player to play for England. More than that he is the best of people, kind, caring, courteous and an inspiration to all of us these at Gloucestershire.
Working with him since he has been club president has been both awesome and heartfelt. He has opened doors for us that we did n't even know existed, helped us learn, and made us friends. That connection is a very specific item and some I know we all cherish.
" I know I speak for anyone associated with the team in sending all our passion to David, Gaynor]Lawrence's family ] and all of their family and friends."
Lawrence, who had a fractured knee while playing for England in 1988 and one ODI between 1988 and 1992, suffered what was essentially a career-ending damage at the age of 28 when he broke his knee while running in Wellington's Test match against New Zealand.
He made an unsuccessful rebound five years later, playing for Gloucestershire for four first-class games before retiring, but he stayed fit and pursued competitive athletes in later life.
In 2021, he spoke about his knowledge of prejudice at Gloucestershire, for which the team offered an unconditional apology. Since then, he has been leading Bristol's African-Cararibbean Engagement Program.
Ian Thomas, managing director of representative companies at the Professional Cricketers ' Association, said:" The PCA is in serious horror at the dreadful news David Lawrence has just received. We have no doubt that David may continue to fight and exhibit his unwavering resolve to fight MND because he has been an inspiration throughout his cricket and post-crick job.
" The PCA and the Professional Cricketers ' Trust, the athletes ' generosity, will be here for David and important, his home, offering the best possible help".
