After the second ODI, England seamer will switch from white to red.
Developing as an all-formats, all-conditions bowling is a work in progress for Matthew Potts. At this stage, he is half through gauging how that is coming down, with a weekend of white-ball actions set to make means for a fortnight with the dark.
Friday's third Cricket at Lord's is an opportunity to circle the line with Australia, and set up a judge in Bristol on Sunday, perhaps if weather threatens to have the final state. On Tuesday, just two weeks after that second ODI, Potts will be one of six members of the squad to travel out for the Test journey to Pakistan.
It is an unduly limited return. Potts has been carrying three suitcases around with him to carry them through the line ' finish and the three Tests in Pakistan with him as soon as they are finished. Home beckons at the end of October.
" I think that's the beauty of being a multi-formatted bowler," Potts said. You must be prepared for all occurrences while also being able to divide for various circumstances. I've got all the stuff packed but I'm focused on this white-ball set second. "
Among the garments, equipment and, of course, golfing clubs, the Durham bowler is hoping he packed some more speed. That, he believes, is the first step to becoming the multi-faceted swift he wants to be.
" It's something that I've looked at: being not only important in England, but likewise helpful somewhere," he said, when asked about the upcoming Pakistan journey. " There's been a shift, trying to increase my ball speed, try and get a bit more powerful elsewhere. I believe I'm making good strides in my efforts to be valuable wherever I go. "
At present, Potts ' velocity from his debut time to now have been consistent, averaging 132kph. However, the 25-year-old has made adjustments that he think may lead to higher speed weapon sales.
" It's something to do with how my run-up is and how violent I can get, and even using my before arm a little bit more quickly," he explained. Although I often feel a little slower during a bustly run-up, it might really go a little faster. So it's just experimenting and experimenting with stuff... There is no true, exact formula for how to do it; it is just experimenting with small things and observing what it looks like. "
It will be Potts ' first outside Test cap on his second trip with the full club, and he will need to get one in either Multan, where the first two games will be played or Rawalpindi, where they will be played. He missed the previous visit to Pakistan at the end of 2022, despite playing the initial five of his eight Test matches that summer, despite being excluded from the preceding one. He did not participate in New Zealand's 2023 tour.
That England were able to defeat 3-0 two years ago remains undoubtedly their most impressive achievement under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. Potts, for all his conviction in his skill, loves he might not have been able to assist as a bowler back then in the manner James Anderson, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson did.
" No, perhaps not. I probably did n't have the extra ball speed," he said. " That is something I've been working on for the past six or seven times," I said." My activity perhaps was n't at that stage yet." "
With Wood being excluded due to an elbow issue, none of those three cricketers are in England's plans this time around, but Potts and Potts are in the mix. What has been a sporadic foreign occupation that has included 15 appearances over the past two years will be ended by doing so.
His 2024 global summers only began in August. Harrison ' hamstring injury prevented Sri Lanka from recalling him for their first two Test matches. At Emirates Old Trafford, the first innings ( for 48 from nine overs ) was ring-rust ( for 3 for 47 ), which was then stoked by a few more wickets at Lord's.
He was left" a little bit gutted" when he was dropped for ultimate Evaluation at the Kia Oval, making way for Leicestershire's Josh Hull. That England chose a large left-armer on their debut, taking only two Division Two wickets this year for an eye-watering 182 overall. 50, suggested Potts, in their eyes, did not offer something that they did not already have.
He had his first chance to prove then in this ODI set. He has assumed the role of new-ball bowling with much fuss, and in turn showcased some skill. According to his market price of 5, there has been great control. 28, the lowest of all England's bowlers. A beaut in the following ODI that beat Steve Smith's off tree came out of his three innings. A unique gap between Smith's wicket and pad was found thanks to the perfect length and some ideal soon movement. He had the unfortunate decision to not get more.
As far as white-ball cricket is concerned, Potts does have an easier way into England's ideas, especially as they look to restore their kingdom from damage. In many ways, this is an interview to present he can be a practical alternative for Chris Woakes.
" Certainly Woakesy's done a fantastic job for the England one-day area. That's great boots to load.
" Whether that's taking the new game and bowling something at the close, that is usually probably going to be my part in this area. It's going to be great, and I'm looking forward to it and taking it on. So maybe I'll keep on going in the right direction. "
