Fast bowler hopeful that he wo n't need surgery because he's told to stop picking up kids with his right arm.
This month, Mark Wood may learn whether his right elbow has a stress fracture and whether the issue needs to be corrected surgically.
After a test revealed what the ECB called a "bone-stress damage," Wood was declared out for the rest of the year at the start of September.
The England rapid, who had a top speed of 97.1 % against West Indies at Trent Bridge and registered continuously in the middle of the 1990s, was previously withdrawn from the Sri Lanka series as a precaution after contracting a right thigh stress during the first Check against Sri Lanka. Only then did a regular check on his elbow, which he had felt stiff during the West Indies collection earlier this summer, later result in his being exempt from Pakistan and New Zealand's Test runs this winter.
Although this week's appointment will determine that for sure, the ECB medical team is optimistic that surgery wo n't be necessary. The first test at King Edward VII's Hospital in London three weeks ago revealed that the patient had no apparent bone and was hopeful that surgery might be in order.
In 2022, Wood had two activities on his proper elbow to remove bone shards and cut a muscle that was trapped in the shared, and returned to action again to his best, bowling some of his fastest magic in the next two seasons, including the 2023 Ashes. In the upcoming weeks, it should be decided whether he needs to go under the blade once more or whether he actually has a stress fracture.
" It was a ridiculous injury", Wood told BBC Test Match Special during the second ODI between England and Australia at Chester-le-Street. " I had a bit of a thigh change and went for a test with a stiff neck which is not unusual for a quick bowling.
" I was thinking I might have an treatment which may give me a great time period with having the groin injury. The physician looked a little worried as I went through the check and suggested we should check this more. My neck is said to have some bone tension. I must have been playing with it.
They expressed concern that it would be a strain bone, but I will need to see a doctor in a few days to decide that. A bit of a crazy one genuinely".
Wood revealed that Wood has also been told to use his right edge less frequently, including when carrying his children.
" On my right side, there is nothing I can do." I've been told to use my right shoulder to prevent picking up my kids. With only my remaining, I have to do everything. With a big left arm and a skinny right arm, I'm hoping to return like [Rafael ] Nadal.
