India pitchers are in desperate need of a re-start against roll, according to Ryan ten Doeschate.

" The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England ]so] that we've kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength, fall back a little bit", says new assistant coach

The original Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate is eager to tackle the challenge as the team prepares for a home year that includes five Checks, two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand.

" One of the challenges I was n't expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters," ten Doeschate told TalkSport Cricket. " We got undone in Sri Lanka. "

In the most losses of any team in a three-game line, India lost 27 wickets to roll in Sri Lanka's recently concluded three OD Is. After the line, captain Rohit Sharma said it was an area that needed some addressing.

" The attitude of India has been such that they've been but eager to do well overseas," ten Doeschate said. " The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England [so] that we've kind of let using roll, which was always a power of the Indian team, fall again a little bit. I'm looking forward to playing that role, making Indians the best spinners in the world once more. "

Ten Doeschate, 44, is one of two aides alongside Abhishek Nayar in the Gautam Gambhir-led coaching team. He has been active in the training loop since his retirement in 2021, having worked with Kent, Kolkata Knight Riders and, more recently, LA Knight Riders in Major League Cricket.

In his fresh position with India, he said the emphasis would be mainly on planning rather than being overly complex. " I do n't think much of what we're going to bring is technical knowledge to these guys," he said. " It's more about beliefs, situational awareness, how we think they can handle certain aspects of the sport.

"[It's about ] throwing ideas out there, de-briefing and keeping the mental space really nice. That's going to be really important. "

Ten Doeschate expressed concern for the difficulties of taking over a successful team that is recovering from a World Cup defeat, but even worry about the challenges that lie ahead.

" It's interesting and kind of overwhelming at the same time," he said. " In terms of what we're looking forward to, qualifying for the WTC last [next June is a goal]. There's a great opportunity with 10 Testing left, five in India [over the next couple of months] and then going to Australia [for five more at the end of 2024] is going to be fantastic.

" Then in the medium word there's the Champions Trophy [in February 2025]. With just three Batsmen left in the preparation cycle, it will be very difficult to switch between the formats and prepare the team for that, which they are, once more, desperate to win.

" Then in the next [WTC ] cycle, the tour to England [summer of 2025 ] is going to be fantastic and then prepping the team for the [2026] T20 World Cup. In terms of scheduling, it's very difficult to walk into a team that's just come up with the [2024 T20] World Cup, but in terms of what's ahead for the next 18 times, it's mouth-watering as a coach. It's all the problems and set you want to face. "
