As part of a Tasmanian team joining the Australian Football League ( AFL ), there is a plan to play indoor Test cricket at a new Hobart stadium.

The Tasmania Devils will join the AFL's 19th team in 2028, and a portion of the package will be based on the construction of a new stadium. A clear roof and a floodlit T20 area make it possible for daytime cricket at Macquarie Point and a multipurpose 23, 000-seat venue.

" We want to get to red-ball]cricket], that's our focus", Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Anne Beach told SEN Tassie. The challenge is that we ca n't be accredited until it is constructed, so what we need to do is work with Cricket Australia and Tasmania to ensure that they have all the necessary information.

" We are workshopping with them through comprehensive layout so we are making certain we are factoring in everything they need, ]so] they have a clear understanding of how it's coming together then maybe that sign-off process is very easy. However, we do want to see that the stadium's entire information is in the red, which is crucial, in my opinion.

Early this year, the Macquarie Point stadium's idea designs were unveiled. Ball-tracking information has been used in developing the plans to ensure the roof may be higher sufficiently for cricket.

" Cricket's biggest concern was the height of the roof... they cited concerns with Marvel Stadium]in Melbourne ] where the ball could potentially hit the roof," Cox Architecture CEO Alistair Richardson said.

" What we've done is we've worked through looking at Hawk-Eye and the ball-tracking systems, to really determine the optimum height that anyone's hit a ball, which is quite fascinating. " Then, actually, ]we've ] pushed the roof to 50 metres, which cricket was really happy with, because there's no instance of anyone hitting a ball at 50 metres".

Experts have said that the layout of the roof means there will be very little influence from dark on the playing area.

In the early 2000s, Marvel Stadium held indoors OD Is, and BBL games can be played with the ceiling closed, but Test cricket has not occurred at an enclosed venue.

Although it would probably spark discussion about Bellerive Oval's future, Cricket Tasmania seat David Boon reiterated the state's intention to play cricket there.

" There is a great opportunity for Tasmania to be a leader in innovation for the future of the game", Boon said. As the pattern is finalized," We want to play cricket in this stadium and look forward to working with all parties in the coming times."

Tasmania next hosted a Exam in the 2021-22 period- its second since 2016- when the last match of the Ashes was switched to Bellerive Oval from Perth according to Covid travel restrictions into Western Australia. It is unlikely to step another Exam in the majority of the latest Future Tours Programme. Australia's people will enjoy a T20I against Pakistan in November followed by the next ODI of the Women's Ashes in January.
