The English sports union club's Mitesh Velani worked there for ten years.
Mitesh Velani, who left Saracens as a result of the salary cap controversy, has been named as their new chief economic and businesses officer in Yorkshire.
Saracens, the London-based rugby union membership, were fined over £5 million and docked 35 positions in 2019 after they were found guilty of breaching the English Premiership's pay cover across three times.
Mitesh Velani, who did add Yorkshire in a newly-created position on September 16, spent a generation working for Saracens. He was the team's finance director from 2010 until 2017, before taking over as general executive- first in an interval capacity- until 2020. In January 2020, he assumed the role of chief professional, transitioning to a consulting position before quitting the team shortly thereafter.
Velani was mentioned frequently in the independent disciplinary committee's report detailing the charges against Saracens, and was the main witness when the club attempted- clumsily- to make the case that the league's salary cap was anti-competitive.
The screen found that Velani's see speech had "largely been copied exactly" from one made by his father, Ed Griffiths, in a prior disciplinary situation. Velani's failure to" clarify the extent to which his written speech merely reiterated Mr. Griffiths ' earlier speech and addressed things of which he had no first-hand information" was described as "regrettable" according to the commission's report.
Velani's association was quoted as having "brought transformation and innovation to the operation of the club during a decade of sustained success both on and off the field," but Yorkshire did not address the salary cap scandal.
Velani said it was" an honour" to join Yorkshire. He said," I'm looking forward to utilizing everything I have learned to support Yorkshire at this exciting time." Working with the Board, I have a burning desire to contribute to Headingley's success and produce exceptional results, supported by solid commercial foundations and our shared goal of making Yorkshire Cricket a place for everyone.
Velani's appointment comes at a time when Yorkshire are in transition on and off the field. Ottis Gibson will step down as head coach at the end of the season, making them look to hire a new director of cricket, Anthony McGrath from Essex, as well as a new head coach.
Colin Graves, Yorkshire chair, will ballot members in November as he seeks to demutualise the club, which would require a 75 percent vote from a minimum 50 percent turnout. " If people do n't vote for demutualisation, then unfortunately, Yorkshire's going to fall into these financial problems time and time again", Graves told the Yorkshire Post last week.
Graves said that he has been speaking to IPL franchises and American investors about the prospect of buying stakes in the club, while Yorkshire will soon be gifted a majority stake in Northern Superchargers by the ECB. " They will not even consider investing in Yorkshire as a members ' club- that is fact", Graves said.
Yorkshire also announced on Friday that Sanjay Patel, the main architect of the Hundred, will become their interim chief executive when Stephen Vaughan leaves the role next month.
Patel was the ECB's chief commercial officer from 2015 and took charge of the creation of the Hundred from 2018, acting as the tournament's managing director until the end of last summer. He has been a member of Yorkshire's board since February, when Graves returned to the club as chair.
Patel expressed his delight at joining the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. The board has shared their experiences with me, their challenges, and most importantly, their ambitious and bold future goals with me, with a lot of ease. Together as an organisation, we will do the best we can for the members and supporters aiming to move forward in all areas".
Vaughan, who left the organization in late 2022, said he was "very proud" of Yorkshire's accomplishments." The club is now in a much better position and ready to continue its journey back to sustainability and success on and off the field.
" I want to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, often in very difficult circumstances, for their support and dedication," he said.
Velani and Yorkshire have been contacted by ESPNcricinfo for comment.
