Ebony Rainford-Brent targets 2030 in ACE's long route to picture

Founder of the American Caribbean Engagement program "hopeful" that sport has then recognized the needs of the Black community.

Ebony Rainford-Brent, the founder and chair of the ACE Programme, says she is more hopeful than ever that English cricket understands the needs and challenges of Britain's Black communities, one year on from the publication of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket ( ICEC ) report into the sport's structural inequalities.

Speaking at the start of a fresh method,' Road to Representation', which seeks to bring ten cricketers through the program and into the professional sport by 2030, Rainford-Brent said that the voice of india's conversation about race had been transformed in the four years since the ACE programme was founded in response to a 75 percent decline in Black British skilled players.

" I've gone from forlorn five years ago, in terms of individuals recognising there are concerns around diversity within the game, and now I'm actually hopeful", Rainford-Brent said. " I think we've recognised the problem and we're putting in activities across the activity in response to the ICEC statement. However, I believe a decade's worth of actual work would be required to demonstrate that the activity has completely changed and expanded.

After launching at The Oval in January 2020, ACE ( which stands for American Caribbean Engagement ) has since expanded to five additional centres in Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield. A full of 26, 000 younger people have been engaged with the program, of whom 200 are considered' wealthy possible'.

Earlier this year, ACE's fast influence was recognized as one of three specific organizations that will receive £14 million in federal funding as part of a new initiative to increase exposure to cricket in state schools over the next five years.

Later this summer, ACE will announce the first consumers of its new Rookie Agreements- fully-funded options for two young people ( one man, one woman ) to develop their careers at first-class counties. And, with 21 % of ACE Academy players now graduating into county pathways, Rainford-Brent is optimistic that their target of ten professional players before the end of the decade is attainable.

" The reality is it's a big, ambitious challenge, but that's what we've been about with ACE over the past five years", she said. One in five of our talented young players are already progressing into junior counties ' talent pipeline, and some of them were either hardly interested in cricket or simply did n't have the support. Therefore, we think it's possible to see talent come through if we keep producing at the rate we do.

The new strategy also aims to accelerate female participation within ACE, with hopes that the current figure ( circa 20 % ) could be closer to a 50-50 split by 2030. To that end, they have launched a new scheme called' Blaze Her Trail', aimed at girls who have already achieved elite-level success in other sports, in particular athletics.

" We realised with the women's game, the development rate is slower", Rainford-Brent said. " And we realised we would n't get to representation if we just go through the traditional way. When you consider other sports, bobsleigh and rowing have acceleration programs, so we did the same and found female sprinters from our target group of athletes who have competed at the highest level and are now attempting to become fast bowlers.

Rainford-Brent recalled an encounter some years ago with Denise Lewis, the Olympic heptathlete, as part of the inspiration behind the initiative.

" Denise had never played cricket, but given her javelin background, she just knew how to get into position," Denise said. We do n't know how it will pan out, but a lot of people in the talent pathway have had the same theory. If it comes off, we will have another conversion pipeline in the next few years".
