The shifting of venues from Bangladesh to the UAE presents a unique problem.
England are anticipating clear venues for the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in October, but they think their future training camp in Abu Dhabi will lessen the impact of the late shift from Bangladesh to Dubai and Sharjah.
After months of unrest, which led to the resignation of Bangladesh's prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the ICC confirmed last week that the game would no longer be held there. The English squad did not alter as a result of the shift, but they are anticipating a change in the UAE, particularly off the field, and small attendances.
" It's going to be a little diverse", Heather Knight, England's captain, said. " There surely would've been bigger masses in Bangladesh, having played there in 2014 in the World Cup. We actually got some really good crowds, particularly in Sylhet … It's become the norm for us to have people around. It is something we'll talk about, but it's a World Cup: it should n't take too much to get up for that".
England will play their first three fixtures at Sharjah Cricket Stadium ( 16, 000 capacity ) and their final group match at Dubai International Stadium ( 25, 000 ). No venue has ever managed to attract large crowds for games that did n't include India or Pakistan during the 2021 men's T20 World Cup, nor does it regularly host women's international cricket.
" Some people thrive off the noise and the power from the crowd, so]it's about ] making sure, inpidually, that everyone is prepared for possible what we're going to get. I do n't think, suddenly, there's going to be a big rent-a-crowd. However, it is what it is, and security and other considerations are unquestionably crucial, Knight said.
While England have spent the past 18 weeks planning for a game in Bangladesh, doubling down on a spin-heavy plan, Knight backed the ICC's choice to change the place. She said," It's obviously a shame for the Bangladesh team that they wo n't host a World Cup." " But I think it's probably the right decision … the conditions may be somewhat different, but no hugely".
England will appear in Abu Dhabi on September 13, three months before their opening World Cup match, for a teaching station. "]That is ] the little that's a great advantage for us", Jon Lewis, their head coach, said. " We've asked them to make innings that are related to what you would believe in the two venues, so by the time we get to the game itself, we think we'll be truly ready".
Dubai and Sharjah have just sporadically held women's T20Is: Sharjah has staged 10- most just in 2017- and Dubai just five, all between UAE and Namibia a year ago. This implies that England is relying on men's match data for planning and is afraid of entering the World Cup with too many preconceived notions of problems.
" There's clearly not been a huge amount of children's cricket that, so you're going off people's stats", Knight said. Lewis expects the toss to play a major role in floodlit sports, as in the men's T20 World Cup three years ago:" It will be a factor", he said. There are some minute variations between the stadium in Dubai and the batsmen in Sharjah.
Even if the event had continued to be held in Bangladesh, England would have chosen the exact crew, according to Lewis and Knight, and they downplayed concerns that they are one seamer light. " I do n't feel like we are", Lewis said. We know that a woman's ability to spin is really important in the overall success of the game, but it might be harder for spin bowlers to grip the ball with some moisture.
Lauren Filer was the only player to have in England's house T20Is this june to miss out on choice, if will go to Abu Dhabi for next week's training camp. She was edged out by Linsey Smith, the left-arm spinner, who Lewis suggested covered more bases:" In the Powerplay, she's a really effective bowler, and then she can bowl through the middle and the death".
Despite only taking six wickets in eight matches, Knight praised Filer as being "really unlucky to miss out" and expressed her admiration for her performances during the Hundred. " She bowled brilliantly without taking the wickets that she deserved", Knight said. " But the squad we've picked gives us the most flexibility around potential conditions that we might face".
