The growth, it is learned, is yet to be fully shared with the ten IPL franchises who continue to receive the final engagement rules ahead of the big bid in which squads for the 2025 season may be picked. The franchises, though, were appraised of the IPL's thinking during a meeting with team owners and representatives in July to discuss the retention rules.
According to what the IPL said to the franchises during these discussions, the league reportedly informed them that players needed to be financially encouraged given that the teams were spending more money than they did before. The IPL's proposal was one of the reasons why players were given the opportunity to increase their earnings even though their stature had grown since signing at or near their starting points at the auction and keeping their prices the same despite their subsequent rise. At the 2024 auction, the lowest base price was INR 20 lakh ( US$ 24, 000 approx. ) for uncapped players, and INR 50 lakh ( US$ 60, 000 approx. ) for capped players.
Rajat Patidar, a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter, was an example of one of these. He was initially signed as an uncapped player for his base salary of INR 20 lakh, and after receiving his India cap, his salary was increased to INR 50 lakh. If match fees had been in place at the time of the IPL 2024, Patidar would have earned an additional INR 1.125 crore for the season.
The IPL's recommendation of paying match fees was countered by several franchises who asked what happens to players on the bench. Players were paid a discretionary fee from the franchises ' overall auction purse up until IPL 2024, according to their contracts, based on the team's previous season's performance. This was called Incremental Performance pay. One of the suggestions given to the IPL was, instead of paying a match fee, to finalise the amount to be put in the incentive pot, which the franchise could use at its discretion to reward their performers. However, the IPL seems to have stuck to its original plan.
