On Tuesday, the former India opening met with the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee.
Gautam Gambhir, the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid as India people's head coach, has publicly applied for the position and attended an interview on Tuesday, ESPNcricinfo has learned. Gambhir spoke with the BCCI's cricket advisory committee ( CAC ), a committee set up to narrow down applicants.
The CAC comprises past India bowlers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik.
It could not be confirmed how many uses the BCCI has received, but it has been studied that WV Raman, the former India flour who was India children's head coach from December 2018 to May 2021, has also been interviewed*.
After returning to the company as a leader in November 2023, Gambhir and the BCCI had informal discussions about how to apply for the position.
The KKR work was Gambhir's second stay in a coaching position, he had been a leader at Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 and 2023 Tournament seasons, helping the team count for the playoffs both times.
Gambhir had a last visit during the IPL, but he wanted to mentor India at an event in Abu Dhabi on June 1. " Look, I would love to coach the Indian team", Gambhir said. " There is no bigger glory. Coaching your nation's team is a greater honor than it is. You are representing 140 billion Indians. And more across the globe as well. And when you represent India, how can it getting bigger than that"?
He had been questioned about whether he saw himself assisting India in winning the World Cup.
" How can I help India win the World Cup- I think it's not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 million Indians that will help India get the World Cup", Gambhir said. India may win the World Cup if everyone begins to pray for us and if we begin to play and play their country. The most important thing is to get brave and well, I would love to mentor India".
After VVS Laxman, Gambhir's past India teammate, told the BCCI last month that he was not interested in becoming the head coach, he emerged as the frontrunner for the position. Laxman serves as Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA )'s current director of cricket.
After the T20 World Cup in November 2021, Dravid had signed for two decades before the 2023 ODI World Cup. He finally accepted the BCCI's demand to lengthen his career until the continued T20 World Cup.
The BCCI had said the new head coach may be appointed for for three- and- a- third years, from July 2024 to December 2027, and had head the team in all three formats.
