Boston is one of a handful of groups that never had to experience a 50- win opposition on its way to the NBA Finals.
Tyrese Haliburton, the Indiana Pacers ' level guard, does not play in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, which raises questions about the worth of the Boston Celtics ' path to the NBA Finals.
If Haliburton's kept hamstring, which sidelined him for a stretch in January, cost him the rest of this series, the Celtics may face close- out games against a second right opponent without its best player. The Miami Heat's five activity opening-round defeat to Boston was without Jimmy Butler for the entire season. The Cleveland Cavaliers ' last two loss in a five-game Eastern Conference semifinal series were without Donovan Mitchell.
Would it be the simplest way to reach the NBA Finals, despite Haliburton's suspension?
No statistically speaking, at least. Boston's opponents — the Heat ( 46- 36), Cavaliers ( 48- 34 ) and Pacers ( 47- 35 ) — have won an average of 47 games. Since the club expanded to its present 16- team style for the 1984 finals, 18 NBA Winners have faced a lower average ( or its equivalent ) through three shells:
Alpha ( 41- 41 )
BOS ( 62- 20 )
Cal (66- 16 )

UTA ( 60- 22 )
PHX ( 47- 35 )

The five- and sixth-seeded Pacers from this year may join those who have the toughest paths to the NBA Finals. After a heartfelt Game 2 victory, Dallas now leads the Western Conference finals by the same ratio as Minnesota does, while Boston loses the line to 2- 0.
If the Mavericks win this year, we may congratulate their hard road to a ring, but that storyline had been lost to time once we begin the legacy- based discussion about The Moment Luka Dončić Officially Arrived.
We normally understand that the West was a labyrinth in the 2000s, but nobody is having a meaningful discussion today about how hard the skiing was for those early 2000s Warriors. We discuss Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal's supremacy and the association with the NBA's attending incident, which occurred in Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference finals.
Every hero has its history, and there is a chance the cake street could become Boston's this year. That will depend on how the Celtics ' course of action turns out. In the upcoming square, who are the Timberwolves or Mavericks a credible risk? Could Jayson Tatum earn the title of Celtics ' Finals MVP with convincing evidence? If Kristaps Porziņģis always gets good, and Boston however wins, are we having a unique health conversation? What if the Celtics establish a new monarchy of their own in the future?
The plan is Boston's account right now. It may not be in two days. If they do n't win, and this group is still looking for its first title, it wo n't be in two years. Then they will become the long bridesmaid, who had to endure injury and circumstance to complete the majority of their work.
If Haliburton cannot gain, these Celtic will be the only team to defeat those critics without their best player serving as a floor person in any of the series-clinching activities. This is what we know at the moment.
Even more fortunate for them, perhaps, are the injuries that led these Celtics to the Heat, Cavaliers and Pacers. Without Giannis Antetokounmpo, and without half of New York's rotation, India defeated Milwaukee. Joel Embiid's knee injury impacted Philadelphia's seeding and its ability to emerge from the first round.
Injuries are part of the process. Nobody recalls the Los Angeles Lakers ' victory over the Phoenix Suns in the first round, despite the fact that LA's Bob McAdoo claimed that" they have a great team" because they lack Walter Davis, James Edwards, and Larry Nance. Without those players, we should be running away with this".
The most serious injuries included [Alex ] English, who was quoted as an excerpt from a UPI article about those same Lakers ' Western Conference finals against Denver. The others are Calvin Natt, Mike Evans and Lafayette Lever with knee injuries, Dan Issel with a bruised thigh, and Wayne Cooper with a rib injury". The only thing that remains unanswered is how the Lakers retaliated against the Celtics in the NBA Finals of 1985.
We do not need decades to pass to forget the road to a championship. Is there any reason to think that the 2022 Warriors defeated the Grizzlies, Jamal Murray, and the Mavericks with a weaker Doni? No, they restored their dynasty and taught the Celtics a lesson from the NBA Finals.
Denver defeated the Timberwolves without Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid, the Suns without Chris Paul for four games and Deandre Ayton for the championship, and the Lakers with LeBron James due to a foot injury that two doctors allegedly claimed needed surgery. We recognized Nikola Joki as a legendary figure and his Nuggets as potential dynasty right away.
Jordan's baseball career opened up a championship window for the Rockets, but it seems that that is the only absence we ever actually mention. Heck, we even discredit Orlando's road to the 1995 NBA Finals, even though Jordan was on the court for the entire six- game series. Maybe it is all mystique.
Perhaps our stories are the only ones we tell. But a champion is a champion, and Boston will be one if it is one.
