On July 13, in the opening game of the Las Vegas Summer League, the Houston Rockets secured a 99-80 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Rockets' top pick Reed Sheppard discussed his matchup against Bronny James in an interview, sharing his excitement and reflections on the game.
"It's really cool. I remember we started competing against each other in our junior year of high school, and now we're both in the NBA. I'm really happy for him; he's a great player and a great kid. Competing against him is a lot of fun," Sheppard said. "We won, which is a good thing. I'm just happy to be out there playing, competing with different people. It's fun."
In this game, Sheppard impressed with his performance, going 9-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, to tally 23 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks. Bronny, on the other hand, struggled with his shooting, making only 3 of his 14 attempts and missing all 8 of his three-pointers, finishing with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
After the game, Bronny James spoke to the media about what he hopes to gain from the Summer League. "Every time I step on the court, I aim to get better, especially playing alongside older players. I need to find my niche and where I can contribute best," Bronny said.
Lakers' new head coach, JJ Redick, also weighed in on how Bronny should handle the spotlight and pressure. "I think the first thing is to let go of all the worries and just enjoy playing in the NBA. He's clearly the prime example of someone to study in this regard. He will be a key part of our player development program, and we are heavily invested in him. He needs to enjoy the process and not get caught up in worrying about the results," Redick stated.
