Boston's two headliners have seen and heard it all, and they say they are better for it after five East championships and two NBA Finals.
BOSTON — Jaylen Brown struggled to get the exact phrase right, but you could draw a reasonable conclusion from where he was going by combining the two.
" The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth" is an African proverb popularized by the Marvel film" Black Panther" six years ago, and Brown used it to describe how he and teammate Jayson Tatum deal with the scrutiny of being Celtics and of being on a contending team that has n't yet gotten over the hump.
When questioned about whether he was the most watched player in the playoffs, Tatum chuckled and fired an imaginary left-handed jump shot. He then quipped," Think but" while grinning. So all of this is on the minds of the Celtics ' two headliners.
For a company that just hangs final banners, a company that is constantly being dissected on daily broadcast, social media, and any other place where discussions centered around the NBA are occurring.
It can be exhausting and muscle- racking.
Or, while in the case of these NBA Playoffs, this playoff run offers both the opportunity to alter the tale and the opportunity to become a hero.
On the day of their next Championships, Tatum and Brown are staring down that direction.
" Referencing that, you get to a place where it's, like, you get scrutinized much for a significant portion of your job, it becomes normal", said Brown, going up to the phrase. Therefore it simply sags on you. For me, at least, I may suggest. I do n't know if Jayson feels the same way".
Temple was in some ways the Celtics ' document night hero. Brown, who arrived a month earlier, recalls a variety of emotions, much of which was unexpected when the Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers to claim the Eastern Conference title.
" It's kind of been that my whole profession, in a sense", Brown said. " Only being booed when you were drafted to say you were paid, and you were overpaid again," the statement read. That has been my entire trip.
" It just becomes another article."
The title of the day is Stephen Curry's unheard option from 2022, when the Celtics wasted a 2-point direct over the Golden State Warriors at a level unheard of.
In the last three games of that line, Tatum shot 39 % from the area and averaged just 21 points. Brown had 34 points in the decisive Game 6 loss at home, but he also had five fumbles in each of the previous two activities, drawing both fan ire and attention from the Soldiers ' defense.
The Celtics failed to reach June last year, falling even further behind in the East championships against the Miami Heat, who had lost yet more.
But the path has been laid for them to have fresh bodies, as Kristaps Porziņģis has been cleared from the injury report, and they do n't have playoff attrition either, with a pretty easy road to get here.
" We type of took it for granted at specific times," said Tatum, referencing last month". We did n't make it to the Finals. This time put things in perspective. You can see our pleasure after winning the meeting, I believe. Clearly, that's not the end many, be all, but it really is difficult to get to this instant."
There are still some crazy things to learn, such as Tatum's alleged facial expression when Brown won the ECF MVP award. And the overall discussion over Tatum's individual offensive play, which certainly seems fair given his numbers, averaging 26 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists but shooting 44.2 % from the floor and 29 % from 3- point range.
My mother may have been more resistant than I am. But for me, I do n't take it personal, right? Only a long crack without NBA sports, so they had to overanalyze every little thing, have something to talk about," Tatum said". Did it getting older? Yeah. But, you know, it's the Finals. They would n't talk about me if I was n't good, so... try to take some positives out of it and change the channel."
Brown noted that the Celtics are a many different team from the inexperienced one in terms of Golden State and that he has watched the 2022 Championships in its totality four or five times.
" Yeah, you learn and grow from your activities, from being a 25- year- older to being a 27- yr- old is a big difference," Brown said". Yeah, I'm 27]smiling]. You learn from those activities.
" We got a different team. We got a distinct coach, also, as effectively. We had Ime Udoka, now we have Joe Mazzulla. We had Marcus Smart, Rob Williams, we have Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis. Various team, unique manager two years later makes a pretty big change".
Mavericks manager Jason Kidd debunks the knowledge component of being in the Finals, in a way. When he carried the New Jersey Nets to the Finals in 2002 and 2003, they did n't lose because of inexperience, as he saw it.
" It's simple: skills. Sometimes you do n't have enough talent", Kidd said. We were delighted to be there, as I brought up the Lakers and Nets, but Kobe and Shaq were unable to defeat them. It could be that easy".
When teams are equally matched or when the nova is on the other side, as in the case of Dallas ' Luka Doni, experience or confidence is often determine a team's victory or defeat.
All that matters is the Celtic believe their previous losses have prepared them for this, and they believe it'll support, not prevent.
" I'm a firm believer in whatever happens for a explanation", Tatum said. " There's a lesson to be learned in every situation. I do. I do think a bit different this time, this move- round, two years later. I look forward to the opportunity to do the job.
