On Bank Holiday Monday, the symbol race at Football's Epsom Downs Racecourse resurrected, but there was a mute success.

Football characters gather for a culture in history since 1999 when Birmingham City's Beau Brummie Bulldog won the Mascot Grand National at Huntingdon Racecourse.

Harry The Hornet of Watford won the 2000 contest, Dazzler The Lion of Rushden, and Diamonds ( remember them ) became the annual event. finishing second in 2001, just before Chaddy The Owl of Oldham Athletic's storied time, which was largely Usain Bolt's mascot.

In 2002 and 2003, Chaddy won big thanks to wearing soccer shoes, which were a major benefit to him despite having the bulky large ft of some other mascots.

Things got mysterious in the ensuing years – winners included Graham the Gorilla of little-known Finedon Volta FC, Saffron Walden Town's Wacky Macky Bear, The Sun publication's Scoop Six Cat, Kick 4 Life's Mickey the Monkey, plus Stag from Huntingdon Rugby Club, unsatisfactory sports fans everywhere.

That led to a protest by some sports mascots – Barnet's Mr Bumble restored some sobriety when he won in 2010 and 2012, but win a year later by Barry Barratt, the Barratt Homes health mascot, was evidently the last straw, and the event was discontinued.

A symbol culture returned on Monday although, as a whole host of popular sports figures faced off at Epsom, including AFC Wimbledon's Haydon the Womble, Bolton Wanderers ' Lofty the Lion, Wigan Athletic's Crusty the Pie, Plymouth Argyle's Pilgrim Pete and many more. In full 30 characters took part, raising significant amount of money for the Children's Trust.

After a staggered start, which helped those characters with particularly large costumes, Crusty the Pie faded, weighed down by his large pie head, and giraffes and swans also fell by the wayside.

Grimsby Town's Mighty Mariner surged for the line, but could n't overcome the early advantage of Surrey Police Dog, a police mascot in a hi-vis jacket– meaning that once again, football's fun had been spoiled by a random winner. Cambridge United's Marvin the Moose was not far behind.
