After their worst season in Premier League history, Manchester United's decision to keep Erik ten Hag polarized both experts and supporters.

One of the Red Devils ' few memorable moments of the campaign was the FA Cup victory over Manchester City, which is widely believed to be the main reason for the Red Devils ' continued support under the new Ineos regime.

As was soon apparent after Saturday's 2-1 battle to Brighton, despite United having sufficiently chances to win the match themselves, with the usual clump on following the full-time bell being largely directed at the French manager, will, of course, be scrutinized after every result this season despite of context.

Manchester United eyeing ten Hag substitute

Reports about a potential substitute for ten Hag's upcoming are still swirling, with titles like Roberto de Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel regularly mentioned over the summer.

But, according to former coach René Meulensteen, the users may have already lined up an in-house alternative if the Dutchman refuse to live up to expectations.

Speaking to Gambling Zone, Meulensteen explained that Ruud van Nistelrooy's new arrival could lead to a surprise visit as manager nearly two decades after becoming a fan favorite as a player.

" I do n't think Erik ten Hag will be worried about Rudd van Nistelrooy potentially replacing him, he's too focused on the job at hand", he explained.

" But who knows what the future will bring, if United stutter at the start of the season and the results do n't go their way, Sir Jim Ratcliffe would consider Van Nistelrooy, but at the moment they believe that Erik is the right man and now we need to see what happens.

" It is an exciting growth, what has happened at Manchester United because Ten Hag brought in his trusted staff and many of them have gone.

" Now he has brought in his colleague Rene Hake, who was director of Utrecht, as well as Van Nistelrooy, so he has identified what he needs".

You need expertise and not be overburdened as a director for that position, he added, when it comes to Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over as manager in the future.

Ruud's benefit is that he is aware of Manchester United's size as a team and the importance of two things. If you get it straight on the pitch, it becomes quick off the pitch.

No matter who you are, if you do n't get it right on the pitch, nobody will be under scrutiny for it. What has n't changed at United is ambitions, expectations and responsibilities.

" I've not worked with Ruud as a manager, so I could n't tell you if he has what it takes in that sense, but I worked with him as a player and I know that he's a very, very determined person.

If you compare Old Gunnar Solskjaer to Old Gunnar Solskjaer, it's a benefit that they know the league in some ways, but you need to get it straight on the pitch second, and I think that's exactly the same now that he's a manager.
