Anyone from England may be hired, never someone from abroad. That's according to one renowned boss who's currently turned down the opportunity.

On Tuesday night, president Three Lions gaffer Gareth Southgate announced that he was to move down from the position, following Sunday's Euro 2024 last battle to Spain. Southgate has coached 102 matches for England.

Who will succeed Graham Potter and Eddie Howe, who are already at the top of the odds, is now replete with speculation. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, both of whom represented England during their famous Golden Generation, have been linked, to.

There is mounting debate, also, that an overseas coach may be hired. Jurgen Klopp is in the body, according to a former England sun, though Jose Mourinho is at Fenerbahce, today.

In their background, England has only ever employed two foreign managers. Before Fabio Capello took England to the 2010 World Cup following Steve McLaren's tragic era, Sven Goran Eriksson was the first in the early 2000s to succeed Kevin Keegan.

Maybe the next international coach could have been Arsene Wenger in another world– but the Fleet legend turned the job down half. Due to Southgate taking the position, the Frenchman received an offer to do it eight years ago.

Wenger told the Telegraph in 2021 that he was offered the position in 2016. It is believed that David Dein, the vice-chairman of Arsenal, was a huge supporter of the Swede joining the FA in 2001, following the lead his own Warriors had taken, with the FA claiming to be interested in Wenger himself.

However, Wenger has claimed in the past that he believes the position should go to someone from England. He's not ruled out taking it, but given that he's 74 and in charge of FIFA's international football development, it seems like a chance has passed.

" It is very important]that the boss is an Englishman], I have always said that,'" he again said. " A country like England, with a huge football passion, and as well the structure of the national team, ]it ] looks to me]that it ] demands a guy from your own nation as the leader".
