Manchester United left- up Luke Shaw got his second minutes of Euro 2024 from the bench as England edged past Switzerland
Luke Shaw perhaps had arrived onto the field at Euro 2024 only in time to lay claim to a spot in Gareth Southgate's starting line- up for their semi- last clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday evening.
Despite missing a game since February because of injury, the Manchester United left-back was taken to Germany, with Southgate betting on Shaw as his only out-and-out left-back in a bid to help him gain a foothold once the game began.
That had to wait until later on in England's quarter- last clash with Switzerland, but, with Shaw coming off the bench to play a remaining- back/centre- up hybrid role depending on whether England were in or out of possession.
' Gareth's person' Luke Shaw was nowadays have vital role for England at Euro 2024
Shaw has recently been a critical player for Southgate's England and also scored an improbable opening against Italy in the Euro 2020 last.
But, several damage issues meant Shaw had never played for his country for over a year before replacing clubmate Kobbie Mainoo only after Switzerland took the lead 76 minutes into the quarter- last clash in Dusseldorf.
Nonetheless, former England international Frank Lampard believes that Shaw will now start against the Netherlands in the semi- finals if he is fit to do so.
Speaking as a BBC pundit, the former Chelsea midfielder said:" If Luke Shaw is fit, he starts. He's Gareth's man. If he's fit, I would play him for the balance of the team".
Southgate has started Kieran Trippier on that side in each of England's five games so far, with Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka also filling in at wing- back during the knockout stages.
However, right-footed Trippier has found it difficult to cross the box from that flank, and Lampard believes Shaw will now have the perfect solution after making his return.
