Cole Palmer has signed a fresh nine-year commitment at Chelsea, prompting bemusement and more concerns around Chelsea's rights. The 22-year-old, who excelled at Stamford Bridge next year after his move from Manchester City, is then tied down until 2033.

Handing out nearly decade-long contracts is exceptional and difficult to comprehend, especially in a sport as flexible and unstable as soccer. However, Chelsea are beginning to gain a following: Moises Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Mykhaylo Mudryk are all contracting until 2031, while Enzo Fernandez is only on the verge of signings until 2032.

Palmer's new agreement is among the longest in the history of football, though Inaki Williams even signed for Athletic Club for a nine-year deal in 2019? Given the French club's self-imposed restraints- they can just signal players from their region of Spain- the winger's long contract was perhaps more natural.

Lionel Messi, however, signed a nine-year deal with Barcelona in 2005, a determination that proved persuasive from the Catalan team. Chelsea did hope that Palmer goes on to do likewise great stuff.

Atletico Madrid handed a nine-year offer to Saul Niguez in 2017, although that was afterwards interrupted by an ineffective payment move to Chelsea. After signing for True Betis for a record-setting 10-year deal after the World Cup, Portuguese midfielder Denilson earned himself a 10-year agreement with Real Betis in 1998.

And Spain is also where the longest-ever agreements- theoretically- have been signed. Real Madrid and Barcelona, both, offered life contracts to Iker Casillas, Raul, and Andres Iniesta, respectively. None of these people saw out their jobs at their venues, though: Casillas finally left for Porto, Raul went to Schalke and Iniesta left for Vissel Kobe.

Palmer's offer is not totally unique, therefore, and it does not guarantee that he will remain at Chelsea. But it does give the team lots of financial liquidity if at some point the England international opts for a new problem somewhere.

If no, he will work at Stamford Bridge until he's in his early 30s, when we could all be flying cars and conversing with AI computers.
