Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to contain his thoughts when he missed a penalty in Portugal's last-16 fight against Slovenia
One of the most memorable pictures of the tournament was Cristiano Ronaldo's Euro 2024 penalty lady against Slovenia, in which the former Manchester United and Real Madrid image let his emotions rule.
Slovenia's last-16 match in Germany ended with Ronaldo's Portugal part with more time after both teams had already failed to score in the opening 90 minutes.
When the Portuguese were awarded a 105th-minute penalty, it looked like it would be business as usual for Ronaldo, but the 39-year-old saw his position push saved by Jan Oblak. Ronaldo was obviously upset during a team gather as he struggled to contain the tears before the penalty shootout do occur.
He was finally able to regain his calm for the fight, scoring his penalty as Portugal won 3-0 on location blows to advance to the quarter-finals and the player has now opened up on why he was so upset in the fallout of his penalty lady.
" When you have passion for what you are doing, you ca n't be worried about how you're feeling", Ronaldo told his former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand on his UR Cristiano Ronaldo YouTube channel.
" For example, I cried the day I missed the penalty... when I cried, it's not because I felt that if I do n't score Portugal will be eliminated, and the world will collapse on me. It's not because of that.
" People, they do n't know me. Think that the last 27 fines, you score. And in that time, you feel awful for yourself. The people who come to the stadium, your children, your dad, your partner, people. That makes me depressed.
" But when things go wrong, you feel that. But I love that, I know how to deal with that. But when I missed the penalty I felt awful for myself, for the fans, household- not because of other things. You have to show yourself. For me, if you hide this thing, you're not being yourself".
Portugal may end up losing to France on penalties in their quarter-final clash and Ronaldo would exit the tournament- his last German Championship- without scoring a goal in a big international competition for the first time.
