Unbeknownst to some, though, the aim – and subsequent event – meant even more to Merino than it first seemed. The midfielder celebrated in strange fashion by circling the corner flag before clenching his hands and roaring into the Stuttgart clouds.

But older film quickly emerged online of his parents, Angel Merino, performing exactly the same program at the same location 33 years earlier.
Merino Snr was likewise a midfielder and enjoyed a prosperous career at the top level of Spanish sport, his longest spell coming with Osasuna between 1988 and 1994.
And it was for the Pamplona team that he scored in a 3- 2 win apart to Stuttgart in the next leg of a UEFA Cup subsequent- square clash in November 1991.
