Was the Chennai Super Kings retain MS Dhoni for the IPL 2025 as an unrestricted player? The company is exploring this by suggesting that the IPL reinstate a dated principle that had been in place for more than ten years.

It is understood that CSK wanted the restoration of a law that had been in place since the first book of 2008 until 2021, when it was rumored to have been pulled at the urging of clubs, at the conference between the IPL and the ten companies in Mumbai on Wednesday. This law declares a player an unrestricted player if they had been out of international cricket for five or more years. The majority of the different companies, it is understood, were against reintroducing the rule, aside from CSK.

On August 15, 2020, Dhoni made the announcement that he would leave foreign cricket. Ahead of the following big bid, before IPL 2022, Dhoni was the next player after Ravindra Jadeja on CSK's record of retentions, at the cost of INR 12 million from the show's bid bag. The team just received INR 4 billion for an unlimited player who was retained that year.

If the IPL sets related costs for unlimited players retained ahead of the 2025 bid, it is believed that CSK are eager to preserve Dhoni via that way. Some other companies, however, were not in behalf of giving long-retired tournaments unlimited position.

Owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kavya Maran, is rumored to have stated that respecting a retired player's integrity as well as their value, which would be much higher at an auction, would mean allowing him to play as an unlimited player. If an unrestricted player purchased at the bidding was receiving more money than the original international player who was still playing, she claimed it may set a "wrong precedent." Her idea was for the retired player to be part of the bidding, where the marketplace may establish their reasonable price.

A nose of another company at Wednesday's meet said several teams aside from CSK were of the mind that a former foreign player should not be considered in the unlimited group regardless of how many years he had been retired.

The question of whether Dhoni, 43, will continue to play the IPL is one that has arisen towards the end of the last few seasons. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season and played a limited role with the bat- coming in late in the innings as a boundary-hitter. Dhoni recently stated at an event that they would wait until the player retention regulations were finalized before making a decision regarding the 2025 season.

Retired India players could be allowed to lower base price

The franchises did unanimously agree that Indian players who had not played international cricket for five years should be allowed to lower their base price at the auction. According to what IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin said, a lower base price would increase the likelihood of these players being purchased at the auction.

A franchise head said that capped Indians who had not played internationals for several years were being forced to enter the auction at a high base price, and therefore going unsold despite their names coming up for bidding more than once.
