The Chennai Super Kings, who have won five IPL titles, may keep MS Dhoni, their former captain, as an unrestricted player, if they so choose.

The IPL has chosen to reinstate a law that was implemented in 2008 and that allows Indian people who have retired from international cricket at least five years before the appropriate time to enter the auction as unlimited players. In 2021, the law was repealed. The IPL informed the businesses that the rule was being revived during the larger discussion on unlimited players, though.

In the document listing the retention rules shared with franchises, the IPL said this rule would only be suitable for Indians:" A reduced American player will become unrestricted if he has in the five calendar years preceding the year in which the pertinent season is held, not played in the starting XI in global cricket or does not have a main contract with BCCI. Just American players will be able to use this.

Ahead of the 2022 big bid, Dhoni was retained as the next player by CSK for INR 12 million. Dhoni, who turned 43 in July, has just played in the IPL since retiring in 2020. Dhoni may be paid INR 4 billion if CSK decides to keep him as an unrestricted player.

The single tournament in which Dhoni has played has been making rounds the past few seasons, with the question of whether or not he will perform IPL cricket. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the CSK captain to Ruturaj Gaikwad away of IPL 2024 and played a restricted part with the bat, coming in later in the wickets as a boundary-hitter. More recently, at an event, Dhoni said he and CSK may wait for the player loyalty guidelines to be finalised before taking a decision on his potential as a player.
