He may continue playing until the 2026 T20 World Cup is over.
Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed head coach of Sri Lanka's people's team until the close of the 2026 T20 World Cup. He had been their coach since first July, but had been functioning in an interim power. But having then impressed in the position, Sri Lanka Cricket has given him the full-time career.
Under Jayasuriya over the past several months, Sri Lanka won their first bilateral ODI set against India in 27 years, defeated England aside in a Check for the first time in 10 years, and more lately painted New Zealand 2-0 in household Tests to give the team an outside chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship last.
" The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the group's great achievements in the new journeys against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in demand as the' time head coach '", the committee statement said.
This is Jayasuriya's first major foray into training. He has said in numerous conversations that he views his key role as creating an atmosphere in which people can work with freedom. His methods appear to have received positive reviews in public, with some people giving glowing reviews.
Jayasuriya's past involvements with the team, which preceded his two-year-ban under the ICC's anti-corruption script, had been as chief selection. He had spent two different tours working in that capacity.
His first project as brain coach will be the upcoming limited-overs matches against West Indies, in Dambulla and Pallekele.
