At the time of the affair, Shakib was participating in the World T20 Canada group.
An official at Dhaka's Adabor police depot, where the case was filed, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Shib Al Hasan is one of the 147 people facing charges in connection with an alleged crime committed during the protests in Bangladesh in early August.
The situation, of the death of a gown contractor, was filed on Thursday by Rafiqul Islam, parents of the dying Mohammed Rubel.
Apart from being Bangladesh's most prominent bowler, Shakib is a past member of parliament of the Awami League, the group that was in power in Bangladesh until earlier this month. Some former party officials and lawmakers are named among the defendants, including Sheikh Hasina, the country's prime minister at the time of the demonstrations.
According to the officer ESPNcricinfo spoke to, Shakib is either the 27th or 28th accused in the first information report ( FIR ).
Shakib did not arrive in Bangladesh on August 5 or at any other occasion during the demonstrations that caused Hasina to resign. She then fled the country. Shakib was in Canada at the time, leading Bangla Tigers Mississauga at the International T20 Canada club, being played in Brampton. Before that, Shakib spent the first two weeks of July in the USA competing in Major League cricket before making his first appearance in Canada, where he played from July 26 to August 9.
According to The Daily Star," the plaintiff alleges that some of the accused opened fire on August 8, while hundreds of students, including Rubel, were protesting at Ring Road in the Adabor place on August 5th, as per instructions from some people." Rubel was wounded in the fire and died in a clinic after two weeks, the FIR said.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has put the number of incidents during the turmoil at over 400- between July 16 and August 4- while some studies have put the number at over 650, with several persons reported missing. A temporary government has been established in Bangladesh following the demise of the Awami League, and important organizational changes have also been made. Former Bangladeshi cricket captain Faruque Ahmed has been appointed president.
After winning the January 2014 general elections in his town of Magura, Shakib re-entered the legislature. He is now playing the Rawalpindi Test against Pakistan.
