" I want to play as long as I you," he said. " I've really, truly enjoyed my time fielding and it's been a pleasure and an honour to accomplish that for a number of years. I'm looking forward to being a part of what the team's administration will accomplish next, and I'm excited about that.

Williamson stated that he wanted to play international cricket in three different formats, though his T20 position might be questioned as the team recovers from their West Indies group stage exit.

However, Weenink said that the casual using arrangement afforded to Williamson would only be offered to a handful of top players, citing Trent Boult, who opted out of a northern agreement in 2022, and Tim Southee as others who had earned that option.
