When it comes to the transfer industry, Manchester United and Liverpool rarely do each other a favor...
England star Joel Matip is nearer to securing a move to a new team, in a move which may give Manchester United a helping hand in their own transfer pursuits.
The centre-back, 32, concluded a trophy-laden eight-year magic at Anfield when he left at the end of his contract earlier this summer. He's now on the cusp of joining Bundesliga warriors Bayer Leverkusen.
That's according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport in Germany. He posted on X:" Really good deals. Actually, Matib has an idea of signing for Leverkusen as a free broker.
Liverpool did not receive any monetary gain from releasing Matip. However, it may gain United in a big manner.
The Red Devils under Erik Ten Hag are eager to add protective depth, with Matthijs de Ligt and Bayern Munich both at the top of their targets record. Transfer chairman Fabrizio Romano confirmed via his YouTube network earlier this week that the 13-time Premier League leaders had been submitting a new pay for the 24-year-old – who helped Ten Hag's Achilles to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals.
How does Matip travel into this, then? Also, Bayern have their attention on Leverkusen centre-half Jonathan Tah – whose departure had left a opening which Matip could possibly fill.
If Bayern were to secure Tah's drafting, they would be more likely to refuse De Ligt. The Dutchman's current value on Transfermarkt is around £55 million, which should be within United's achieve.
The ripple effect does not end it, if... signing De Ligt could see the Red Devils have something of a protective clear-out of their own, with Victor Lindelof touted for an Old Trafford return.
