If Harry Kane plays for England against Finland in the Nations League at Wembley on Tuesday evening, he will be added to a select group of people. The 31-year-old scorer is set to become a soldier, after earning his 99th cover for the Three Lions against the Republic of Ireland.

It is a breakthrough that just ten other players have reached in England’s extended history, but Kane’s achievement should surely not get devalued. The Bayern Munich forward is also, of course, his country ’s report goal scorer, with 66 to his name so far.

He may be hoping for many more as he looks to flame England towards an obscure prize. And if Kane stays healthy and avoids getting hurt in his 30s, there will likely be many more hats.

Kane may have Peter Shilton’s report of 125 England looks in his places too. Another 20 games would take the ex-Tottenham captain level with Wayne Rooney ( 120 caps ), and he is 15 away from David Beckham.

In addition to Bobby Moore, the 2014 World Cup winner, and Ashley Cole, a former Arsenal and Chelsea full-back, who has the most caps, Steven Gerrard is the fourth most successful England player ( 101 ). Sir Bobby Charlton ( 106 ), Frank Lampard ( 106 ), and Billy Wright ( 105 ) round off the prestigious list of centurions.

Since making his England comeback in a 4-0 victory over Lithuania in 2015, Kane has established himself as a story. He has since played more matches at major international tournaments than any other player for the Three Lions ( 28 ). And the motivation to succeed for his land remains powerful, despite the sadness of battle to Spain in the Euro 2024 last.

" I think when you look at players like [ Cristiano ] Ronaldo, [Luka ] Modric and [ Lionel ] Messi, all these players who are playing in their mid to late 30s, that's the inspiration for me because it shows that you can really play at a high level for a long time," Kane told BBC Radio 5 Live.

" I want to play soccer for as long as I can, at the highest degree, as long as possible." I use those people for motivation and inspiration to be able to accomplish that.

“ I feel I am in a really good spot both mentally and physically to have another great year, maybe that continues for many years to come. "
