After the previous Three Lions administrator tragically lost his battle with cancer, former England captain David Beckham paid him a sincere tribute.

Eriksson announced in January that he was suffering from ovarian cancer in the final stages of his life, which was announced on Monday. He passed away at the age of 76.

The Swede became the first non-British director of the England team when he was appointed in 2001 and he would direct his team to the quarter-finals of three main games during his five-year charm in charge.

Beckham was chosen as Eriksson's captain in one of his first decisions following his appointment as England manager, which included the memorable moments of his career, including the winning goal against Argentina in the summer of 2001 and the injury-time free-kick against Greece at Old Trafford that secured England's position at the 2002 World Cup.

Beckham's appointment as captain played a key role in the midfielder's redemptive arc following his sending-off in the 1998 World Cup and the 49-year-old has shared a touching video and message.

" We laughed, we cried & we knew we were saying goodbye…", he posted on Instagram alongside a video of the pair during a final meeting, believed to be at Eriksson's home in Sweden.

" Sven thank you for always being the person you have always been, passionate, caring, calm & a true gentleman... I'll always be grateful to you for choosing me as your captain, but I'll also always cherish these final moments with your family. Sven, I appreciate you saying in your final words," It will be fine.

Beckham's message was one of a host of tributes that have flooded social media since the sad news of Eriksson's passing was announced.

In a documentary that was made available last week on Amazon Prime, Eriksson himself said a final farewell.

" I had a good life, "he said". Although we are all afraid of passing away, life is also about death. You have to learn to accept it for what it is. Hopefully at the end people will say, yeah, he was a good man, but everyone will not say that.

" I hope you will remember how a man I was trying to do everything was possible treated me." Do n't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it's been fantastic. Take good care of your life as well as yourself. And live it. Bye".
