Rafa Benitez, the original England employer, worked in the days of George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
During Tom Hicks and George Gillett's ownership as managers, Rafa Benitez revealed his transfer concerns at England.
The British traders took over England in early 2007, with Benitez about to get the team into their next Champions League final in three months. In 2008/09, Liverpool faced a significant name problem, falling really short of toppling Manchester United.
Things fell off from there, but, as previously important people like Xabi Alonso and Sami Hyypia departed without sufficient replacement. Hicks and Gillett's last summer in command, under Benitez's alternative Roy Hodgson, notably saw Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky brought to the team. The team was sold to existing proprietors FSG later that year.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet,, Benitez said:" Under Tom Hicks and George Gillett, I wanted to sign]Stevan ] Jovetic and he was £16 million.
" In my head, I was selling players and had £34 million, but was told that we do n't have money. We went to play against Florentina and lost 2-0 – Jovetic scored both goals. We wanted to sign this player, but we did n't have any money, so I claimed so.
" I wanted to sign Aaron Ramsey when he was playing for Cardiff City, and we made an offer of £1.5 million but Cardiff were playing in the FA Cup and wanted us to rush, but I told them that we had to do it: he was 17 years old. When we went again to try and sign him, Arsene Wenger paid £5 million, and we could n't sign him.
" Gareth Bale, when he was 17 at Southampton, six weeks after we were watching him, Tottenham paid £8 million, and we could n't contend."
After Liverpool dropped from eighth in the desk to eighth place and the elimination of the Champions League in the group stage, Benitez left on "mutually consent" in the summer of 2010.
It would be another five times before they played Champions League football again as the team underwent a repair started by Sir Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers before Jurgen Klopp arrived in 2015.
