Who will get over training Team USA for the Los Angeles Olympics?
Steve Kerr is officially the head coach of the USA Basketball people's team after winning the gold medal at the Olympics in Paris.
According to NBA writer Marc Stein, Kerr is not anticipated to remain the group's head coach. He's expected to take the place of either Los Angeles Clippers mind coach Tyronn Lue or Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. Under Kerr, both worked as helpers in Paris.
A four-time NBA champion as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Kerr joined Team USA as an aide under Gregg Popovich after the 2016 Olympics. When USA Basketball won the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with silver, he was on Popovich's team. USA Basketball named Kerr as Popovich's son in 2021, when Popovich stepped down after Tokyo.
LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry, who have won four NBA tournaments playing for Kerr with Golden State, made a disappointing third place finish in the 2023 FIBA World Cup for Team USA.
In Paris, USA cruised to double-digit successes in its three group-stage activities and in the semifinals against Brazil. It finally won a small semifinal match against a Bosnian team featuring three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and fended off a protest from network France and Victor Wembanyama in the gold-medal activity.
Team USA finished 6-0 in Paris for the agency's second consecutive gold prize. Only four coaches, including Chuck Daly, Rudy Tomjanovich, Lenny Wilkens, and Popovich, have won an NBA finals and served as the team's head coach, who also won an Olympic gold medal.
Kerr's expected successor may take over Team USA for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 with an NBA finals on his head-coaching résumé. Spoelstra has led the Miami Heat to a 750-527 ( .587 ) record in 17 seasons as head coach. He has also coached the Steam to six NBA Finals, including back-to-back tournaments in 2012 and 2013.
Lue has a 312-217 ( .590 ) record as an NBA head coach with the Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers. He coached James and the Cavaliers to an NBA finals over Kerr's Troops in the 2016 NBA Finals.
