Arsenal have begun the winter with a win. Today, they're pushing forward with their next signing of the summer.

With goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, the Gunners made the best start possible by defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at house. Harder tests lie ahead, yet: Aston Villa lie in wait second trip, with Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and first table-toppers Brighton & Hove Albion all back on the horizon.

The need to improve is so obvious. Riccardo Calafiori has already been added to Arsenal's backline, and the club is close to completing a bargain for Mikel Merino.

The midfielder's move is being "finalized," according to Spanish release Mundo Deportivo's Spanish section. Despite being "elegant on and off the pitch," Martinez appears to have generously left Real Sociedad.

Basque store Noticias de Gipuzkoa next year reported on conditions being agreed between player and club, with just the cost to become decided. It appears as if Arsenal struck a milestone with Txuri-Urdin over the weekend.

Amazingly, before at N5 may now be wrapped away. Sporting producer Edu Gaspar recently told viewers that they would" not been disappointed" with the close to the transfer glass – but the team's inability to buy the likes of Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah may stop a superstar forward from being acquired.

In DataVictory's view, Merino is a sensible signing as cover in midfield that we expect to be tied up by the Villa game– though we do n't expect the Basque to be thrown in at the deep end and start that one. The fates of Nelson and Nketiah depend undoubtedly on further deals, but the screen may start to open later.

Perhaps a loan for either may suffice. Given that Arsenal have Havertz as first-choice scorer with Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard as alternatives, however, we expect any new signing to be a strategically dynamic forward able to operate on the sides.

Transfermarkt already values Merino at €50 million. His lease expires following summer.
