Gareth Southgate's coming as England director after Euro 2024 has been discussed by Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Roy Keane
Previous Arsenal and Three Lions forward Ian Wright has stated that Gary Southgate has" no natural alternative" as England director and that he should continue to do so after the World Cup in 2024.
Southgate has won the European Championship twice in a row, having even triumphed in the Three Lions ' semi-finals in 2018 and Southgate has received criticism for the team's displays in Germany this summer.
The Three Lions defeated Slovakia in the last 16 after a beautiful costs blow by Jude Bellingham two minutes from the conclusion forced more time after the England manager had been booed by fans and had empty beer cups thrown at him before in the tournament.
Out of commitment in December, Southgate is expected to get offered a new offer by the Football Association after Euro 2024, but there is a growing sense that the 53-year-old may decide to walk away after nearly eight years in charge.
In a discussion with Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Jill Scott on Sky Bet's Stick to Football: The Overlap Special, Wright said," I would n't move Gareth Southgate on because a natural replacement does n't come right right out of the box." " What he's done for the team and the country, anything he's done with that club up until this point. Why are we trying to bring something else in, when it's not normally there?
" If he does left, it's perhaps for his sake, because you cannot mistake him – especially if we win. We have n't got a natural replacement, no one comes to mind. If I were Gareth and won, I would be asking," Do I really need to go through that?" The first couple of matches, we were also top of the group and folks wanted Gareth out."
And he added:" You look at some of the conversations he's done, and you look at Gareth and there's periods where you think,' This person looks like he's done.' You feel for him, and just Gareth will be able to describe. Because we do n't know what his family has gone through, can you imagine him having to explain this to his family?
During the discussion, Neville said:" That]criticism ] would have hurt Gareth because what he'll want is respect from the fans, who would be very important to him I'd imagine. Cyril Roux been that what feels like 10/12 times, Joachim Löw was there for animal years. There's no cause for us to want to change this director. Why do n't we give him a six-year deal and say,' Look, he's our manager for the next ten years, he's young, the players like him, he's got a young squad, but he was teetering on the brink only ten days ago, even after all he's done. Do I want to throw myself through what I know will happen at some point, he might ask?
He would have been concerned about the effects that he'd witnessed England managers be killed, the former defender said, adding that "normally it does n't go well after that either" and that "he's worried about it going well afterwards." It's harsh, it's more than just losing your job it's an death of your character, your character – you're dirt, you're ridiculed."
Neville continued by comparing Southgate's condition to that of former England director Terry Venables and how he left following Euro 1996, saying that England will likely start playing football again in six to eight weeks. They would have to select the club, and the new manager will likely have to get his feet wet.
" So, what happened before Euro 96 was because it was social, but Terry Venables was essentially fired, and Glenn Hoddle was appointed so he could come in after the event. Now, it just did n't work because Terry did so well – a lot better than everyone expected – the players loved him, so it was like,' Right, what have we done'. Then, Gareth will have to make a fast decision".
And Keane, who has worked with Southgate on ITV in the past, said:" If he does get – only to move back and say,' I've ran my contest now in this'– my god Gareth. We've all worked with him, we know him, what he's done since he's got the job and especially the last few weeks, his character has actually helped. He's been quiet, great – and that's really why some people have been critical of him. He's a little subdued, but that's what's worked for him".
