On July 9, Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George shared insights on his podcast about the contract negotiations with the LA Clippers, highlighting the significant events and his ultimate decision.
Unacceptable Initial Offer
George expressed his initial disappointment with the Clippers' offer of a two-year, $60 million contract. He felt it was disrespectful and far below his expectations. He initially aimed to stay with the Clippers, finish his career in Los Angeles, and win a championship, but the offer made him reconsider.
"I felt the offer was a bit disrespectful—a two-year, $60 million contract was crazy. I thought, 'No, I'm not signing that.'"
Increased Offer but No Agreement
The Clippers raised their offer to around $45 million per year, but it still fell short compared to Kawhi Leonard's three-year, $150 million deal. George expected similar treatment since both stars joined the Clippers together. The main sticking point was the lack of a no-trade clause and the unwillingness to offer a four-year max contract.
"When I heard Kawhi's contract was three years, $150 million, I thought we should get similar deals. But the Clippers didn't want to do that."
Almost Joining the Warriors
George also revealed that he nearly joined the Golden State Warriors. The trade was close, with the Warriors expressing strong interest and envisioning a great fit alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The trade fell through because the Clippers didn't accept the Warriors' offer.
"The trade was close to happening. The Warriors wanted me, and if it went through, maybe Klay Thompson would've stayed, along with Jonathan Kuminga."
Final Decision: Joining the 76ers
Ultimately, George opted out of his contract and signed a four-year, $212 million max contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.
"I decided to become a free agent and eventually signed with the 76ers for four years and $212 million."
