At the cost of hosts Germany, Miguel Merino won the Euro 2024 semi-finals by scoring a stunning success later in extra-time to earn Spain a national warrior. The Actual Sociedad midfielder has just started again for La Furia Roja in each of their Euros appearances.

By much his biggest factor so far was the final- gasp strong header that continued a great run for the Spaniards as they look to get a third European Championship title.

Merino's day at Newcastle United was only one year long when he left in July 2018, so many followers of American sports may recall the name, though perhaps not the player.

Why was Merino's day at Newcastle but little?

In that time, the 21- yr- old made 25 appearances for the St. James ' Park team, scoring one goal – a soon header funnily much, against Crystal Palace– before joining Sociedad.

Merino's departure from Borussia Dortmund was unconventional from the beginning; initially, he was on a loan, but after only five sports, boss Rafa Benitez praised him for "making a wonderful feeling at the club." Merino earned lots of game time in the first half of the year at St. James ' Park, but lost his place after the New Year and ended the battle on the bench.

Speculation around his future, and a return to Spain, was rife throughout the season, but there were suggestions that the reason for him leaving was n't purely down to performances.

Although Benitez insisted Merino wanted to stay, the midfielder was certainly getting in the team again and suffered a semi- serious back injuries. It then emerged that a lease section existed that left the Birds helpless to prevent his exit if it was met.

Merino reportedly had a small release clause that reflected that in place when he played for Dortmund, according to the Newcastle Chronicle. It was said to be fair there in the region of £10.5m to £13m and a "make- or- split need from Merino's representatives" when he first arrived from Germany forever.

So, when Sociedad came with a five- time offer and the promise of more ordinary minutes back in Spain, Merino packed his bags and wrote some proud words to the Toon faithful. " Thank you very much for this amazing year to all the toon family", Merino wrote on Instagram.

" Massive experience that I'll never forget. Thanks to the outstanding fans, who made me feel at home. All the best for the future and Howay the lads". Merino liked the choice, according to the results. Seven years later, he is still at Sociedad, where he won the Copa del Rey, starred in the Champions League and earned international honours.
