Mavericks and Pistons Complete Trade for Quentin Grimes

On June 29, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Dallas Mavericks and the Detroit Pistons have finalized a trade. The Mavericks will send Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Pistons in exchange for Quentin Grimes.

Trade Details and Background

The three second-round picks include one from the Toronto Raptors in 2025 and two in 2028. Tim Hardaway Jr. is in the final year of his contract, with a salary of $16.2 million for the 2024-25 season. Hardaway signed a four-year, $75 million extension with the Mavericks during the 2021 offseason.

Quentin Grimes is entering the last year of his rookie contract, with a salary of $4.3 million for the 2024-25 season. Sources indicate that following this trade, the Mavericks will use most of their $12.9 million luxury tax mid-level exception to re-sign Derrick Jones Jr. Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison emphasized that retaining Jones is a key objective for the team this summer.

Player Performance

In the 2023-24 regular season, Hardaway played 79 games, averaging 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. However, his performance declined in the playoffs, where he averaged just 4.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Towards the end of the season, Hardaway gradually fell out of the Mavericks' rotation.

Hardaway joined the Mavericks in January 2019 as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade from the New York Knicks. Over his five and a half seasons with the Mavericks, he averaged 15.2 points per game.

After being traded from the Knicks to the Pistons in the 2023-24 season, Grimes only played six games before a season-ending injury.

Pistons' Strategy

The Pistons facilitated this trade to help the Mavericks offload an unwanted contract. Currently, the Pistons have $51.1 million in salary cap space, allowing them to assist other teams in managing undesirable contracts while accumulating draft picks.

Reports suggest that the Pistons aim to convert the acquired second-round picks into first-round selections, leveraging their cap space to strategically improve their roster.
